Characterized by its soft fibers, Cashmere is known for providing natural light-weight insulation without all the bulk typically associated with warmer type fabrics. Cashmere is easily spun into fine or thick yarn and you will find the original natural color of cashmere to be various shades of grey, brown and white.

Where The Cashmere for Cashmere Dresses Comes From

Cashmere dresses are made from the light weight cashmere wool fiber. The Cashmere to make these dresses comes from the Cashmere and other goats. Cashmere goats have been given the name “Capra hircus laniger” almost a subspecies name for the domestic goat Capra hircus. Today, they are commonly thought of as part of the domestic goat subspecies Capra aegagrus hircus. The Cashmere goat is first de-haired by means of a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. Once the goats are de-haired, the resulting “cashmere” is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn, fabrics and garments.

Cashmere is primarily collected during the spring molting season. The goats naturally shed their winter coat during this time making it easy to collect and de-hair from the goats.

Largest Country of Production of Cashmere Dresses

China is the largest producer of cashmere and estimates are that at least 10,000 metric tons per year in hair is harvested. The total worldwide is estimated to be between 15,000 and 20,000 tons a year in harvested hair. This results in “Pure cashmere” being produced from removing animal grease, dirt and coarse hairs from the fleece. It’s the pure cashmere that can be dyed and spun into yarns and knitted into sweaters (jumpers), hats, gloves, socks and other clothing like the famous and stylish Cashmere dresses.

In the US, the town of Uxbridge, Massachusetts was where the first power looms were used to manufacture cashmere.

Characterization of Cashmere fibers used in Cashmere Dresses

Raw — fiber that has not been processed and is essentially straight from the animal

Processed — fiber that has been through the processes of de-hairing, washing, carding, and is ready either to spin or to knit/crochet/weave

Virgin — new fiber which has been made into yarns, fabrics or garments for the first time

Recycled — fibers reclaimed from scraps or fabrics that were previously woven or felted, and which may or may not have been previously used by the consumer.

The American Industrial Revolution and Cashmere Dresses Production

In the United States, there were many early textile centers that developed as part of the American Industrial Revolution. Among them, the Blackstone Valley became known as the “birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution”. The town of Uxbridge, Massachusetts became an early textile center in the Blackstone Valley, which was known for the manufacture of cashmere wool and satinets.
